Beyond the Pitch
Best of Startup Week Columbus: 2017 Recap
Startup Week was kicked off by a quick introduction from Mayor Andrew Ginther followed by Focus on Impact featuring Matt Scantland, Co-Founder and CEO, CoverMyMeds.
Two events that stood out this year were the SmartCity event and Importance of Culture with Joe DeLoss, CEO of HotChicken Takeover:
Bunker Labs hosted keynote speaker, D.J. Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy. D.J. spoke to the crowd on the topic of veteran entrepreneurship.
Our team joined in on the fun:
Ryan Helon, our EVP of Investment Funds was featured on the panel Three Stages of Raising Capital, speaking to startups needing capital and where to go to get started. The panel featured Kevin Pohmer, Fintech/Financial Services Executive, Investor, Entrepreneur, Matt Armstead, Executive Director, Fintech71, and Greg Hicks, Vice President, Alesco Holdings.
Rev1’s Director of Community Outreach, Charles Hill, was on the panel Access to Flexible Capital with Owen Pohl, Vice President, Chase, Annie Kentris Arthur, CEO, Juggle, Paul Jackson, Senior Manager, Entrepreneurship & Venture Investments, Ohio Development Services Agency, and Rose Roman, EVP of Lending, ECDI.
Startup Week hosted their first-ever Pitch Competition with two winners: Grypshon and Aunt Flow:
Bunker Labs Columbus
Bunker Labs Columbus started at last year’s Startup Week, this year they hosted not one event, but four: Conversation with J.D. Vance, Veteran Networking, Company Showcase, and a happy hour to end the day.
Startup Grind Columbus
Startup Grind Columbus is hosted at Rev1 monthly, but this time they hopped over to Chase Basecamp to tell the story of Duet Health and Jeff Harper – moderated by the intrepid Startup Grind host Ryan Frederick.
We were excited to partner with The Ohio State University to host three Commercialization events at Rev1 Labs during Startup Week:
We had a full panel consisting of Chris Crader, Co-Founder of ALC Innovations, Caroline Crisafulli, Co-Founder of Minimally Invasive Devices, Earl LeVere, Partner of Ice Miller, and Rob Underhill, President, CEO, and Co-Founder of Simple-Fill.
Shortly after, we had the head of MIT’s Technology Licensing Office, and the head of OSU’s Technology Commercialization Office gave insight into how startups can successfully interact with a commercialization offices.
Startup Snapshot is similar to a pitch competition, however, instead of only looking for investments the startups were also looking for experienced entrepreneurs who will form and lead their startup companies based upon technology developed in Columbus at The Ohio State University.
Gotta feed your hustle. Columbus Startup Week had an amazing collaboration of food and swag to keep everyone moving:
