Beyond the Pitch
Saying Goodbye to a Tech Visionary
Recently, the technology community, and indeed the whole of Ohio, lost a true champion and visionary for entrepreneurship and innovation.
Bob Massie’s enduring impact on Central Ohio’s technology sector is profound. He saw technology-based economic development as an important means to make Central Ohio a growth story. That belief was steadily reflected in his engagement and leadership
As Columbus Technology Council chairman and president of Chemical Abstracts Service, Bob was instrumental in gaining the agreement to blend and merge a number of organizations and initiatives across the region to form TechColumbus.
In meetings, Bob was the biggest thinker in the room; he could see issues from so many different perspectives and had the ability to be considerate of so many different opinions. Bob steadfastly believed that Central Ohio could become a technology destination. He worked out front and behind the scenes to make this come true.
“When Bob spoke in his quiet voice, he expressed gigantic thoughts. When he talked about economic development, he talked about accelerating innovation. Let’s create an innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem in Central Ohio that’s second to none, he’d say. He encouraged us to be smart and inclusive, not political. He said, let’s shine.”
Dwight Smith, CEO/Founder Sophisticated Systems,
Former Board Chairman, Rev1 Ventures
And shine, Columbus has.
TechColumbus has further progressed to become Rev1 Ventures, a premier venture development organization with the expertise, connections, and investment capital to fuel startup success, and that the Rev1 Labs is ranked the #3 university-affiliated accelerator in the world, is testament to the accuracy of Bob’s aim.
Columbus was recently voted one of the world’s most intelligent cities. Bob’s commitment, leadership, and influence had a huge part in elevating Columbus over the last 20 years to where the city is a draw for entrepreneurs and startups and can now receive recognition like this.
