Beyond the Pitch

Porter Wright Supports Entrepreneurs with VentureNEXT Sponsorship and Expert Network Services

It’s been more than 165 years since Porter Wright, a Platinum Sponsor of VentureNEXT, was a startup.

In fact, Columbus Business First recently named Porter Wright to its list of Central Ohio’s Oldest Businesses.

That longevity and consistency speaks to the firm’s commitment to supporting one of VentureNEXT’s key objectives: fostering connection and collaboration among established businesses and young, developing businesses in Central Ohio.

Representing small, emerging businesses is part of Porter Wright’s culture.

Porter Wright has a legacy of people who recognize the importance of providing sound, solid legal representation for people focused on building their businesses.

“We respect that legacy and continue to promote that culture,” said Rick McQuown, a partner at Porter Wright and chair of the firm’s Emerging Business Practice Group.

“We have structure within the firm to support this practice area, from the entrepreneur who calls and says, ‘I have an idea; what should I do?’ to the person who says, ‘I’ve started a business and I’m at the point where I need some guidance,’ ” McQuown said.

Young companies begin their client relationship at Porter Wright with McQuown and others who have experience helping startup and emerging business owners define and drive toward achieving their goals.

These attorneys act as quarterbacks when various issues arise, tapping into the broad spectrum of capabilities that a firm of Porter Wright’s size and diversity can offer, whatever challenges a young business faces.

McQuown describes himself as the luckiest guy in the world.

“I look forward to coming to work every day,” he said. “A large part of that is the makeup of my practice—working with new companies, companies raising capital, on through to mergers and acquisitions. It’s an exciting practice.”

Porter Wright, an engaged participant in TechColumbus’ Expert Network, is a proactive sponsor of VentureNEXT.

“We’ve always been very supportive of organizations that support startup businesses,” said McQuown. “TechColumbus is a prime example. Through its Expert Network, we provide pro bono and discounted services to TechColumbus’ resident companies, and we see VentureNEXT as an opportunity to encourage more entrepreneurs—a vital component of Central Ohio’s overall economy.”

McQuown calls out VentureNEXT as a meaningful way to nurture the atmosphere and culture for founding businesses in Ohio.

“It’s hard to start a business,” he said. “It’s very hard to be a successful emerging business, so when young companies achieve that, it’s important for the community to recognize it. VentureNEXT is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to tell their stories, to encourage others and to show how it’s done. Bringing people together who support entrepreneurs continues to validate the whole process in Central Ohio and the work we’ve done.”

McQuown has a self-declared soft spot for entrepreneurs.

“Typically, lawyers are very conservative,” he said. “Entrepreneurs are not. They second mortgage their houses, max out their credit cards, and pursue with passion what they believe is a great business plan. Through entrepreneurs, we get to live a little vicariously. We view ourselves as their partners, not as outside advisors. We want to help them succeed.”

From six offices in Ohio, Florida and Washington, D.C., Porter Wright seamlessly brings together the knowledge, skill and experience needed to help clients achieve goals and solve problems effectively and efficiently. The firm is recognized as a leader by The Best Lawyers in America®Chambers USA® and U.S. News–Best Lawyers Best Law Firms rankings. In addition, the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) has named Porter Wright an ACC Value Champion.
