About Michael Turnbull

I retired from Abbott Labs after 30+ years in the medical device business nearly four years ago.   At that time, I founded MLT Advisors, LLC, a consulting firm that is focused on assisting medical device and medical technology start-ups.   Most of my professional experience is in the cardiovascular space with a primary focus on heart failure. MLT Advisors has engaged with companies in a wide variety of medical specialties, assisting with fund raising, business development and commercialization strategy.

During my professional career, I held sales and senior sales management positions at both large corporations and several start-up companies.  I was involved with many cutting-edge technologies including:  one of the earliest cochlear implants, the Jarvik-7 total artificial heart, the first implantable wireless loop recorder (ECG monitor), regenerative tissue technology and the #1 implantable heart pump in the world.   I have extensive experience with new technology commercialization and I’ve built several highly successful sales teams.

While sales and sales management were the primary focus of my career, my roles expanded into strategic planning, marketing, reimbursement, regulatory and clinical affairs in my work with the startup companies.   One highlight of my experience was as the Director of Sales & Clinical Services at Thoratec Corporation from April of 1997 to October of 2006 where, under my direction, the field organization grew from two individuals to 40+ and annual sales grew from less than $10M in 1996 to $200M+.

I am a graduate of Miami University.  My wife Cheryl and I live in Columbus, OH and are the proud parents of five children and have two Akitas.   In my free time, Michael enjoys playing golf, listening to music, attending the theatre, traveling, and enjoying fine wine.
